It certainly was not a normal night at the Mayflower on Wednesday night… The creepiest, kookiest family are visiting Southampton from the 18th-29th of July and are putting on quite a show with the Uk & Ireland Premier of The Addams Family Musical Comedy*.
The Mayflower stage is transformed into the Addams Family grandiose home and you are a fly on the wall as Wednesday Addams introduces her rather ordinary boyfriend and his family to the rest of the Addams klan, begging for one normal night as she’s trying to impress. I found this story so humbling and relatable, just wanting your family to act normal and not scare off friends or future relationships with their wacky behaviour. Mixed in with the colourful score and dance numbers the show is a real scream. If you know this funny family you can undoublty guess that it was never going to be a normal night. As soon as that familiar Addams Family tune began the whole audience started to click there fingers, I knew we were going to be in for a treat.
A star filled cast with the likes of the young and talented West End star Carrie Hope Fletcher playing the Princess of Darkness – Wednesday Addams, Eastenders actress Samantha Womack as the sultry Morticia and Loveable Les Dennis as good old Uncle Fester. The whole family were incredible but for me the star of the show had to be Gomez played by West End star Cameron Blakely. I just loved the quirky character he created, from his little jokes to flamboyant gestures, bouncing around the stage, I was in absolute awe. Carrie blew me away with her vocals. The whole ensemble, although quite small, was just seamless and captivating. The stage was rather simple but honestly felt like you were right there in the Addams family home with them.
I am always intrigued to see how producers turn such classic films into musicals and cannot say I was disappointed with this production. Andrew Lippa created a wonderfully fun and colourful score From the opening Duh-duh-da-da *Click-click*, Gomez little solos which had me in stitches, to Wednesday belting out ‘pulled’. It was full of fantastic music and choreography, did I mention the Morticia and Gomez broke out into the tango?! I really enjoyed the quirkiness of this show, and the touch of classic Addams family that Matthew White has managed to create. Filled with singing, dancing, potions and torture and reminding the audience its okay to be a little weird… Its a well rounded production with all the bonkers and crazy parts that you love about musicals. You won’t be able to keep a straight face!
